America continues to wrestle with the issue of illegal aliens. The political parties are at a stand still not sure what direction to take. State Governments like Arizona are taking a stand passing legislation the Federal government is working hard to claim is unconstitutional. Caught in the middle are people, human beings we call friends, fellow citizens, state budgets, economies both individual and government, businesses, impacted by the costs of government not able to arrive at a solution. Being tired of an ineffective government on this issue has led me to begin a discussion of a plan on Twitter. The plan being discussed is an idea that has been developing for some time. How effective or good a plan it is, is up for discussion. My reason to use twitter as part of the democratic process to developing a plan to have Congress consider. Can it be done? With millions of twitterers, is it even possible to believe we can come together when our political parties aren't able to. Having less to say using Twitter will help contributors stay on topic with more thought being brought to the solution.
The general plan up for discussion is as follows:
1. Have all illegal aliens register with a requirement they become citizens within a year. It is important for America to know exactly how many illegals there are. Becoming a citizen is an important part of the American process that has built America. Everybody needs to understand their role in maintaining the America we know and love. Arbitrarily making them citizens is only divisive. Our goal is to unify Americans. To do so requires additional components.
2. Voting rights are not earned for 5 years after becoming a citizen. Why, a penalty for being illegal, keep the parties in power honest, This is very important helping to prevent a major shift in American politics. it gives our new citizens time to understand the political process before they vote. There is a reason why we have young people wait until they are 18 to have the right to vote.
3. Governmental benefits: Social security, medicaid... aren't available for 10 years. Allows illegals to contribute to their own plan, requires them to become part of the working force with medical benefits and contributions to the American system through taxes.
Additional thoughts to consider to allow America to assimilate illegals into America with as little impact as possible to our democratic society.
* Many illegals have huge families and allowing them to bring in entire families once a citizen needs to be discussed. This could impact our society negatively with additional costs our government will not be able to afford.
* Illegals who commit a crime any time during this period of becoming a citizen and contributor to society will be deported immediately. We must remember they are illegals. There is a cost associated with being illegal, that must be paid.
* Illegal aliens one a citizen who volunteer for our military or government service should earn the right to vote without waiting 5 years.
As we begin this discussion on Twitter, it is important to understand these ideas are to generate thought that creates a discussion leading to a possible solution all Americans will find contributes to the democracy we are so proud to be a part of.

it's a big issue. Part of it has to do with the Unions also making companies want to move out of the country due to ridiculously high salaries and benefits.
So, I think that needs to be fixed first. We need to have enough jobs for the people who are here already. I think that needs to be addressed first. Once there are a surplus of jobs and we need immigrant labor, then I think we should have a more permissive immigration policy.
Right now, we have to compete with China's slave labor.
We (our nation) must come to understand the issue isn't going to go away. Our nation must realize the cause is no different than the issues brought on by slavery so many years ago. Cheap labor, increased profits, for our nations benefit. Isn't this how both nationalities became an integral part of America that has divided the nation, reducing the liberties and freedom for all of us including them. America is a land of democracy understanding individual rights. To solve the issue, we must go back to our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence to realize all humans must be respected. It isn't a pay back for what another nation does to its illegal aliens. We must get to a point where we as a nation are better able to identify illegal aliens and deal with them within our laws. Right now, the definition is cloudy at best as politicians, businesses, all recognize their power in this nation and want to capture their dollars and vote. Yes there must be penalties for being here illegally. The burden and costs right now are ours to bear. This must change. America is a land of opportunity not welfare. They must earn the right to be Americans. Registration must be first. Shoring up our borders must be a part of this process with a stricter process for treating illegal aliens that must be enforced.
Once registered they must become US Citizens within a year. I believe they must learn to speak English. Our nation has been built because we have been unified by a language. Our discussion has begun. Thank you vrajavala for your input and help arriving at a solution.
I must say that some of your suggestions are ok. However, I don't think that we should reward illegal aliens with anything. Do yo have any idea what Mexico does to illegal aliens?

You are correct. it is a big issue. Job creation should be number 1, not sure if this is fully understood by our current federal government. Growth of the private sector is very important part of American economics. Private Sector jobs created cause less drain on Americans as profit and success generates income that keeps the country moving positively. Creating government jobs, including redoing the entire health care system drains the economy of the money needed to get us out of our recession. Government jobs take more money with taxes out of Americans pockets money they require to run the new programs the government finds will create more government jobs. That is a joke.
